Canada’s International Education Strategy (2014)
The federal government has released its International Education Strategy. Developed, in part, by the Minister of International Trade, Ed Fast, it outlines the federal initiative to increase the “internationalism” of Canada’s education sector.
The document reiterates the advantages of international education for Canada. It identifies the six markets most likely to send students to Canada as part of the Global Markets Action Plan – Brazil, China, India, Mexico, N. Africa & the Middle East and Vietnam. It suggests we must maintain our advantage in recruiting students from France, UK, Germany, Japan, Korea and the US.
It also includes a commitment to “brand” Canada more so in the future.
Admittedly, the strategy continues to focus on recruiting international students to Canada as it has done so in previous years. However, it also mentions “expanding the delivery of Canadian education services abroad; and, building, expanding and ensuring greater partnerships between Canadian and international educational institutions”.
This sounds like greater support for provincially accredited Canadian off-shore schools. What it will look like, remains to be seen.
