Macau SAR is a small peninsula on China’s southern coast, known for its rich cultural heritage as a former Portuguese colony from the mid-16th century until 1999. The mix of cultures is evident in its architecture, festivals, and cuisine.
With a population of around 700,000, the historic centre, a UNESCO World Heritage site, features colonial buildings like the iconic Ruins of St. Paul’s and Senado Square, alongside traditional Chinese temples, reflecting the region’s diverse history.
The linguistic landscape is equally rich, with Cantonese predominating and Portuguese retaining its official status.
Local dishes, like Minchi and Pastéis de Nata, reflect this unique blend. The city is increasingly becoming an arts hub, with galleries and cultural events that celebrate both local and international artists.
